The Fo Guang Shan International Volunteer Program is an opportunity for people travelling from abroad to experience authentic Chinese Buddhist life at Fo Guang Shan Monastery through volunteering.

We hope that this opportunity will provide a platform for you to develop a sense of greater happiness and well-being. We hope that your experience here will help you to see life from a Buddhist perspective.

I had the privilege of volunteering at FGS Kaohsiung early this year. In my subsequent travels, I also visited FGS Manchester, FGS London and FGS France.

I hope to continue visiting other FGS branches. There are over 200, so I imagine I will be doing so for quite some time. Hopefully many other international volunteers will do the same!

Through my interactions between the venerables and foreign participants, I found myself immersed in a fascinating exchange of constricting perspectives and insights, which was a truly enriching experience.

Every day, I would wake up at 5 a.m. and walk to the Main Shrine for morning chanting. I would walk especially slowly, being mindful of each step I took. When prostrate to the Buddha, I would put my palms together. "Ding," slowly bow down. "Ding," slowly reverse my palms. "Ding," slowly rise up. By focusing on each action, mindfulness emerged, and my inner self became clear.

The idea of giving to others is so ingrained in the day to day life of the monastery. It made me start to give to others more too. Giving someone a compliment, offering more help with volunteering or a listening ear when needed etc.

A lot of the volunteers, including myself, gave ourselves projects or areas to study to make good use of the free time. It seems to be a place that attracts intelligent and likeminded people who genuinely mean well.
